Part 3: Plan for the future
Career discussions were always one of my favorite parts of the job. It is a chance to understand what motivates employees and dig into various paths' pros and cons. A career should follow the interests of the individual and company, not a timeline of generic promotions.
Use the review discussion time as an opportunity to look back AND forward. Ask questions about what part of the job your employee likes and with whom they enjoy interacting. Discuss expectations on both sides. Create a timeline to have more conversations. The annual review is an easy time to tackle the topic, but let employees know they are worth your time and energy to focus on their success multiple times throughout the year.
