When I think back to my days as a new manager, I expended a ton of energy trying to get others to perform at my expectations. I struggled most with colleagues who had the ability but not the desire to put in the effort to excel. Those with a passion but lacking some skills can outperform those with inherent talent. They will need more training and support but will be happy to improve. Not everyone will choose to shine. If they succeed in their job and don't desire additional responsibility, reward them in context to their job and put more energy and resources into those interested in growth.
