Work folklore leads us to believe that if we put our heads down, do what we're told, and work hard; we'll magically progress down a career pathway dotted with promotions at key intervals solidifying our status and success. As a manager, I spent a lot of time discussing career paths, and here's the hard truth: it is far more realistic that you will have to raise your hand, ask for what you want, and develop a career based on how you choose to market and strengthen your skills. Find people who support you (and vice versa), encourage you to improve, and steer clear of those who make you a lesser version of yourself. You own your career, not your boss or your company. Make it into something you are proud of, and that fulfills you.
